Understanding Differences

John Richie, our avid supporter managed to collect £314.00 for his 935 skips, delighted by the money the committee were much relieved they didn’t have to skip, the poor man must have been exhausted.

John also spends much of his time manning boot sales, collecting from our various collection boxes, selling raffle tickets, and to top it all held a rocky horror night in Feb 2008 at the rose and crown in Crawley in aid of UD, Guy’s hospital and LHM (Little hearts matter).

Donna and UD wish to thank everyone who helped with our sponsored event on 22nd September 2007 and made it a success.

A few people came along from EDF Energy, Crawley to join in with the skipping and support John Ritchie their work colleague. Others in attendance were Ross' brothers James and Ben, avid supporter Kathy and Donna of course!

John pledged to skip 400 skips although on the day he set a target of 1,000 as he had approximately £600 promised to him from sponsorship money from workers in the company.

After an early injury(!!!) almost reaching 1,000 skips, John made it to 935 skips before crashing out on the floor!

James aged 14 pledged to skip 200 and made it to 206, whilst Ben aged 9 pledged to join in and skipped a massive 430 skips!

A few passers-by joined in for a short while so we added all the skips together, making a grand total of 2,824 skips over the course of about 3 hours!

It was an emotional time for our family and close friends. The event marked the 2nd anniversary of our loss; of a gorgeous brother and precious son. 22nd September 2005 was the day of my little boys death following his 3rd open heart surgery for Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome at the age of 3 years and 3 months.

The money was being raised to publish short books to help other children understand what may happen if they, their sibling or friend are born with similar life threatening conditions.

Although we have yet to form a team of readers to assist in the market research of this project from all walks of life ... professionals, parents (with and without knowledge of illnesses) and children. If you think you would be interested then please contact me on committee@understadningdifferences.org.uk for some more information. The books are only short (16 pages in total, yet the story contents are about 9 pages per book). So far UD have drafted 5.

I hope you enjoy the photos and thank-you in advance for your donations for this event.

John, note the hidden
person helping with his Kilt
Everyone ready
Hang on, the crowd
are going wild already
This Kilt was
a bad idea
Ah, that’s better
Looks like
too much
hard work
Is John just taking a break
“No, I’m shattered”
Ah, but you did great
